Welcome to 2019! I hope that each of you took time to celebrate the holidays with family and friends and that you are excited to start a new year preparing our nation's workforce. Personally, I had the opportunity to spend a little time with both of my sons, their wives, and my grandson. All are doing well and excited for a new year of opportunity–365 days of opportunity to be exact!
Typically, in January, we reflect on the successes of the past year and look forward to what's coming in the new year. In 2018, we attended several outstanding conferences including ACTE's CareerTech VISION conference held in San Antonio, Texas. We kicked the conference off with a pre-session for new CTE administrators. Along with Nocti Business Solutions, NOCTI participated in ten breakout sessions focused on our partner collaborations, including the new Marine Service Technician Credential with ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council), career readiness in a global economy with The Asia Society, and our work in urban environments with LRNG. Other NOCTI/NBS-sponsored breakout sessions focused on professional development, alternatively-certified CTE teachers, occupational advisory committees, and recognizing quality credentials. In addition, for the fourth year, we co-hosted the successful Credential Corner with ACTE which showcases several industry-based credentials offered by national educational and industry associations.
As many of our regular readers know, both the NOCTI Board of Trustees and the NBS Board of Directors hold their annual fall meetings during the VISION conference. During this year's meetings, both boards spent time discussing the opportunities of the 'Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century' legislation (Perkins V) and are excited about the new opportunities and flexibility it provides.
Since we have been talking about collaborative efforts with ACTE, it may be helpful to mention that we are in the planning stages for a follow-up to our inaugural Credential Summit. We are tentatively titling the 2019 Summit Continuing the Conversation. This national conference will take place in Raleigh, North Carolina on October 2-3, 2019. It promises to build on the interactivity and engagement of the first event, so mark your calendars NOW!
Our collaboration with the Credential Engine hasn't slowed either. Many of our readers are likely aware that the Credential Engine Registry now boasts over 5,000 credentials from its contributors. We are excited to be one of the first organizations that is in the process of developing an app to access data housed in the Credential Finder. NOCTI plans to be among the first to take full advantage of the power of this initiative for the benefit of the CTE community!
As we reflect on 2018, it is natural to take a look at some of our numbers. In 2018, we discussed quality credentialing in approximately 16 states and facilitated just over 60 training and/or webinar sessions for our customers. If you missed out on these sessions, you can access recordings by visiting our Publications page on the NOCTI website. We held 142 collaboration meetings with our partners via electronic media and attended 23 different conferences! Our most active states this past year include Georgia, Pennsylvania, New York, Michigan, West Virginia, Indiana, Virginia, New Jersey, Missouri, Florida, Kentucky, Minnesota, Illinois, Wyoming, and Maine.
NOCTI continues to provide professional development opportunities on numerous topics, but key among them are determining credential quality, digital badging, data-driven instructional improvement, and new CTE teacher and administrator development. Many of these areas are linked to our growing library of CTE publications. In fact, we just wrapped up our second CTE administrator book with ACTE, and are starting the third installment in the CTE administrative leadership series. The books can be purchased through ACTE's bookstore.
We started this newsletter with a note of optimism about the opportunities that 2019 brings. We believe that CTE leaders, both at the state and local levels, will be instrumental in continuing to increase the technical competence and knowledge of the students we serve. Perkins V shifts much of the accountability for quality CTE to state leadership, so it is critical that each state has a vision that builds on the 100 years of success enjoyed by CTE. Over the last several years, CTE program success has generated an increase in the number of students interested in CTE and we know that those additional numbers can stress existing resources. We believe that CTE directors (state and local) will be vigilant about maintaining high-quality CTE programs, even as student numbers increase and ensure that we as a community don't sacrifice quality for quantity.
