NOCTI Staff Updates

 Message from President/CEO John Foster

It really felt like I was re-engaging my previous work history these last few months! Some of you know I have a background in construction and that I tend to draw examples and experiences from my background. You may also know that I have two sons. Oddly enough, both have been involved in their own construction-related projects recently. I’ve been helping my older son construct a tiny house in California and have been advising my younger son on a home purchase in North Carolina. These projects occurred on the heels of an office expansion project at NOCTI headquarters in Michigan. For a former construction-type, it has been a gratifying few months! It’s been fun utilizing competencies acquired in the past, and recognizing the longevity of skills that one acquires from a career and technical education (CTE) foundation, of which NOCTI is proud to be a part. This message also follows ACTE’s premier CTE conference, CareerTech VISION 2017, recently held in Nashville. NOCTI enjoyed meeting with many old friends in the CTE community and making new acquaintances, as well. We appreciated all who were able to stop by our exhibit and Credential Corner as well as those that were able to join us at the annual NOCTI consortium reception, our pre-conference session, the book signing event, and any of the various sessions we presented at VISION!

During the NOCTI Reception, we honored teachers and administrators with our C. Thomas Olivo Outstanding Service Award and our Carl J. Schaefer Memorial Award. You’ll find information about these awards and the winners later in this edition of our newsletter. These awards are in memory of two of NOCTI’s founders, C. Thomas Olivo and Carl J. Schaefer. This year, we found another way to honor their contributions. As a result of our headquarters expansion project, we were able to carve out five meeting spaces, both formal and informal. To honor our tradition and history, we have named those spaces after five of our founders. If you are ever in our neck of the woods, we invite you to stop in and see those spaces, and visit with our great staff.

VISION 2017 also provided many great outreach opportunities, such as the hosting of another successful “Credential Corner”. Four new credential providers joined this year, making 2017 the biggest Credential Corner yet! We hope you had the opportunity to stop by to talk about credentialing resources from our partners and from NOCTI and Nocti Business Solutions!

We met with many dedicated CTE professionals during the book signing event for our fifth book collaboration with ACTE and the first in a new series, CTE Administrative Leadership: 10 Things to Know in Your First Year. This new book follows the very successful Putting Your Data to Work book and the 10 Things to Know book series which is focused on becoming a new CTE teacher. Visit ShopACTE or the NOCTI Shop to pick up any of our titles. The 10 Things to Know teachers series is being used by a number of universities in their CTE teaching programs, and several states are incorporating the books as professional development tools. We should also mention that the authors and our staff are available for in-person or online professional development activities related to this topic.

What else is new at NOCTI? We have new partnerships and collaborations and we are making plans for an inaugural Credential Summit! NOCTI recently partnered with FANUC, a global leader in manufacturing automation, to offer the FCR-01 FANUC Certified Robot Operator 1 certification, as well as the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) to offer two Marine Service Technician certifications. Also in the beginning stages is the development of a cybersecurity credential; more on that in coming newsletters!

Another exciting initiative at NOCTI is our involvement with Credential Engine (CE). Maybe you had the opportunity to take part in the presentation NOCTI hosted with Southern Illinois University at VISION 2017. If you didn’t, perhaps you were able to catch the first public rollout of the online registry in Washington DC on December 7th. Essentially, CE hopes to provide transparency to those seeking any sort of credentials including degrees, licensures, badges, certifications, and diplomas. It’s an exciting and forward-thinking initiative sponsored by Lumina, JP Morgan, and Microsoft and we are proud to be serving on two of its committees: 1) the Technical Advisory Committee and 2) the Credential and Licensure Advisory Group. We are also proud have some of the first credentials listed on the site!

Finally, NOCTI and ACTE are partnering to host the first ever CREDENTIAL SUMMIT! This summit will be held during the week of ACTE’s Best Practices and Innovations Conference in Louisville, Kentucky. ACTE will be offering a discounted registration if you wish to send a team to both events. Watch our newsletters, websites, and social media for more information. In the meantime, place a calendar hold on September 25th, 2018!

On behalf of the NOCTI staff, our Board, and our Consortium of States, I sincerely hope you had a great holiday season! Remember to take time to think about the important role each of us plays in growing the workforce. As always, if you have an idea about a new service or product that you would like NOCTI to offer, or have other suggestions or questions for us, please email nocti@nocti.org.

Thank you for trusting NOCTI to deliver the quality credentials, comprehensive data, and professional development needed to help improve your programs. We look forward to your continued service to the CTE community and look forward to hearing from you on how we can meet your needs!
