"Busier than a puppy in a room full of rubber balls!" In the last few newsletters we've started by mentioning something about the Perkins V reauthorization. In fact, in our 1st quarter consortium meeting, we discussed the secondary performance indicators. In most states, the legislation has triggered significant additional planning activities. If you couple that planning with the amount of time that schools, colleges, and state offices have been closed due to weather, and with the general increase in activity that often comes at this time of year, you have a lot of people putting in long hours. With all that in mind, and being a dog lover myself, I thought that many folks reading our newsletter could relate to our opening quote!
In the same way that you are busy keeping students current on the technical skills needed in their selected industry, NOCTI is busy perfecting the tools that will help you assure that you are teaching to national industry standards. We also want you to be able to use these tools to show the competence your students have gained and to use the data that proves it!
Last year NOCTI and Nocti Business Solutions (NBS) partnered with ACTE to co-sponsor the first Credential Summit in Louisville, Kentucky. It was a great event with a number of partners from our industry association network represented. Our audience in Louisville enjoyed their day of learning and that positive feedback led us to decide to co-host another Credential Summit, in Raleigh, North Carolina, October 2-3, 2019. This year, we've invited a number of employers including Foxconn, and Oerlikon, who will speak about what credentialing means to them. Over the years, we've discussed our work with apprenticeship groups and I think we've even mentioned a project in which we have partnered with the state of Pennsylvania and the Northeast Equipment Dealer's Association. This work will help to prepare future farm equipment technicians by incorporating the new skills needed to keep today's high-tech infused commercial agricultural equipment moving forward. This program will provide multiple access points for new learners, as well as incumbent workers, to gain the new competencies needed.
These days it seems the media is talking a lot about workforce shortages and potential solutions to address the issue. That’s why we are so proud of our sister company, NBS, for engaging with a number of our partners and the state of Florida to work with a population that many often forget–those seeking to re-enter society from our prison system. We can’t tell you much about this project right now, but it’s a project that involves a number of our existing partners, and it's something that we believe in. By the time most of you have the opportunity to read this article, ACTE's National Policy Seminar (NPS) will be in our rearview mirror. This meeting provides great opportunities for the CTE community to meet with legislators on a variety of CTE-related initiatives. We are also excited to announce that the NPS meeting was a springboard for our newest book release! We are rolling out two new books with our partners at ACTE. One of these resources is available now, the revised Putting Your Data to Work is a complete revision of the book on using technical data. The other is our second book on becoming an administrative leader in CTE, CTE Administrative Leadership: 10 More Things to Know in Your First Year, and will be available soon. It can also be found on ACTE’s website. These books follow another great set of resources about becoming a new CTE teacher.
We are also excited to be working with the state of Nevada for a second, third, and fourth series of professional development activities targeted to improving the skills of new CTE teachers. This longer-term focus on CTE teaching and learning is based on the new CTE teacher book series mentioned above. Many of you are familiar with Today's Class and the work they do with online learning. One of a series of modules they have available relates to workplace readiness. NOCTI has worked with Today's Class to align the online curriculum to NOCTI’s 21st Century Skills for Workplace Success credential. Additionally, we have created a package that was initially offered to select states. This package provide 1,000 students with a set of pre-tests, study guides, online curriculum, credentials, digital badges, and college credit. The content is student-centered and can also be delivered in a blended format or simply as a teacher resource. We have been working with the American Culinary Federation on some great ideas for your culinary programs. One of these ideas involves a linkage to Marriott as well as some new online resources. Watch our upcoming newsletters to find out more about what’s happening.
I'll mention one more upcoming event before closing this spring's newsletter article, and it’s something we have been doing for a number of years now- our video contest. CTE students have a chance to show off their creative and technical abilities while gaining recognition for their school during CTE month! The 2020 theme "Victory in CTE" was recently announced. Share this with your students and get them excited to share their submission during the 2019-20 school year!
We hope that a few of the things mentioned in this newsletter highlight some of the reasons that set NOCTI apart from other credentialing bodies. Not only do we provide over 170 technical credentials, but we also keep them up-to-date with industry standards, tie them to college credit, and provide reports that enable CTE programs around the country to continuously improve. As important as those things are, we also maintain accreditation to the ISO 17024 standard for certification programs. We remain focused on collaborating with entities that we believe will continue to assure your students' success.
